Design and Specifications of the 1847 Cent
The 1847 Cent, part of the Braided Hair Large Cent series, represents a significant period in American coinage. This design, introduced in 1839, was the last of the large cents before the transition to smaller-sized cents in 1857. The Liberty Head design by Christian Gobrecht was a refined version of the earlier Matron Head type, featuring a more youthful and artistic representation of Liberty.
1847 was a year of westward expansion and growing tensions over slavery, with the Mexican-American War still ongoing. The cent, as the workhorse of everyday commerce, played a crucial role in the rapidly expanding American economy of the mid-19th century.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers
The condition of an 1847 Cent significantly impacts its value. Due to their long circulation and copper composition, many specimens show considerable wear. High-grade examples, particularly those in Mint State, are scarce and highly sought after.
Coins with original red color (designated RD) are especially valuable, as most have toned to brown over time. The strike quality can vary, with well-struck pieces commanding a premium. Smooth, problem-free surfaces without corrosion or environmental damage are crucial for higher grades.
Mintage: 6,183,669
Rarity Scale: Common
Circulation Status: Widely Circulated
Preservation Rarity: Scarce in grades MS65 and above
Varieties Errors: None of particular significance
Market Demand: Moderate, popular among type set collectors and large cent enthusiasts
Toning can play a significant role in an 1847 Cent's desirability. Coins with attractive, even toning are often preferred by collectors over those with spotty or unappealing color. The presence of luster, especially on higher-grade specimens, can greatly enhance eye appeal and value.
While not typically collected by die varieties to the extent of earlier large cents, some collectors do pursue different die pairings. Coins with exceptional eye appeal, regardless of technical grade, often command strong premiums in the marketplace. The historical significance of large cents also adds to their overall appeal and value among numismatists and history enthusiasts.
