Design and Specifications of the 2013 Nickel

The 2013 Jefferson Nickel continues the long-standing tradition of honoring America's third president, Thomas Jefferson, on the five-cent coin. This design has been in use since 1938, with minor modifications over the years. In 2005, the obverse portrait was updated to a forward-facing view of Jefferson, but in 2006 it returned to a left-facing profile, albeit with a more modern rendition than the original Schlag design.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers

Condition plays a crucial role in the value of 2013 nickels, although their recent mintage means that high-grade examples are relatively common. Uncirculated coins (MS60 and above) are readily available, with premium prices only for the highest grades (MS67 and above).

For circulated coins, wear on Jefferson's hair and Monticello's steps are key areas to examine when determining grade. Full Steps (FS) examples, where all five or six steps of Monticello are clearly visible, can command significant premiums, especially in high grades.

Philadelphia, P

Mintage: 774,800,000

Rarity Scale: Common

Circulation Status: Widely Circulated

Preservation Rarity: Common in all grades, including MS65 and above

Varieties Errors: None significant

Market Demand: Low, primarily collected as part of date sets

Denver, D

Mintage: 839,040,000

Rarity Scale: Common

Preservation Rarity: Common in all grades, including MS65 and above

Varieties Errors: None significant

Market Demand: Low, primarily collected as part of date sets

Luster and strike quality are important factors for uncirculated 2013 nickels. Coins with exceptional luster and sharp, well-defined details can be more desirable to collectors.

Toning, while less common on modern nickels, can add value if attractive and natural. However, any signs of cleaning or environmental damage can significantly reduce a coin's value.

While not particularly rare, 2013 nickels in superb gem condition (MS67 and above) or with Full Steps designation can still command premium prices among collectors and are worth looking out for in circulation or coin rolls.
